What’s the nature of asking for help? It seems to emanate from a deep, humble vulnerability. A surrender that we know in our bones we can’t accomplish alone. In this state, our growth becomes truly possible, our perspective shifts rapidly and our eyes finally open. I have embodied this feeling on more than one occasion, as I imagine I will continue to do. Each time I’m called to ask for help again, my bedrock foundation sows deeper roots.
Who am I? I’m a therapist first, educator second. My name is Alexa Cordry. I’m a Licensed Social Worker and a Licensed Clinical Alcohol & Drug Counselor who has spent the last five years working closely with individuals in peer recovery support, case management and psychotherapy to address substance use & mental health disorders; both root causes of and resources for.
I have a personal stake in this game. Over five years ago, I found myself in that particular mix of humility & vulnerability, asking for help once again. After over a decade of substance use and mental health struggles, I reached out to find the resources that could assist me in getting what I needed to build a foundation where a new life could be laid. What I found was that when I started asking, the resources unfolded in front of me. I was able to get the help needed to write the post you’re reading today.
Now, I am desperately passionate about getting others the things they need to succeed in recovery. I’ve found when you start looking in the right places, the world will open up to you. That being said, there’s a level of privilege & access you need in order to enter certain healing spaces. With the pandemic continuing on and mental health & substance use showing higher rates than ever, this inaccessibility to adequate resources has become a public health epidemic. True systemic change needs to occur to make recovery resources less stigmatized and broadly available (partnering with community agencies and lobbying your congresspeople is a great starting point!).
As this push continues, my personal commitment has been to provide as much education as I can around recovery resources. I’ve joined the My Help Connect team because I believe in their mission of connecting those who need help to those who can provide it, in realms that go past just the typical therapy & medication recommendations. My Help Connect has a vision to anticipate all things one might need to recover, and bring them together in a platform that can become a one stop shop for your recovery needs.
While you’re looking at those resources, you will now have access to free education from me on topics ranging from how to prepare for therapy, coping skills, differences between mental health services, family dynamics, substance use recovery and more. My goal is to explain to you what has been stigmatized for too long, and help you make baby steps towards your goals.
I do this because one day you may find yourself in that particular blend of humility & vulnerability, ready to ask for help. I hope on that day you find the help you are looking for. I’d like to help you find it.
